About the Project

As part of an international team of experts in theater and urban design, DLK was selected to create a new theater in Downtown Chicago. The Goodman Theater is now part of the Loop's century-old tradition of theaters on Randolph Street. The project involved the restoration and renovation of two National Historic Landmarks on the site: the Harris Theater and the Selwyn Theater. The terra cotta facades of both were repaired and restored. The new complex features two theaters. The Albert Ivor Goodman Theater is a conventional, proscenium-style performance space with 850 seats, while The Owen Bruner Goodman Theater is a smaller, more flexible performance space that can be reconfigured four different ways, with as many as 400 seats. The new complex also contains support spaces for The Goodman Theater Organization, including rehearsal rooms, costume shops, dressing rooms, and administrative offices.A particular challenge to the project was the noise and vibration from elevated and subway train lines adjacent to and below the theater. Rubber isolation pads and a continuous acoustic isolation joint around the theater spaces eliminated environmental sounds.
