About the Project
Team Interplan designed and built the environmentally friendly campus while making a minimal impact on the surrounding ecosystem. Some of the many environmental features that were incorporated into the design are:

• Retained the maximum amount of forest while locating and constructing the buildings and roadway.

• Orientated buildings and positioned classrooms to allow for maximum penetration of day lighting.

• Re-used existing soils removed during construction and built tree wells and retaining walls from excavated boulders.

• Utilized a variety of environmentally friendly materials in the building construction, which either consist of post consumer products or are fully recyclable.

• Used exterior siding boards that were harvested from local pine forests and rough sawn into varying sizes to greatly reduce waste.

• Utilized large areas of glass for optimum viewing of the natural environment.

• Designed buildings to incorporate large overhangs to reduce heat gain in the summer.

• Created a "heat sink" from flooring materials that will radiate during evening hours.

• Designed high-space volumes into most buildings to relieve air quality at the building circulation spaces.

• Provided an "Energy Management System" to centrally monitor and control mechanical systems.

• Implemented monition sensors and photocells into the lighting systems to minimize energy consumption.

• Incorporated the design of a "living Machine" wastewater treatment facility, which passes wastewater through a series of tanks containing live animal and plant material. This system accelerates nature's own water purification process and transforms sewage into clean water.

About the Conserve School
Conserve School, founded by the late James R. Lowenstine, is a futuristic, non-sectarian, independent, coeducational boarding school for students in grades 9-12. A college preparatory program, the school places special emphasis on wildlife, natural habitats, and ecology. Using a combination of science, math, technology tools, and communication skills, students will work to solve real ecological problems in the community. The program prepares all graduates to be ethical and environmentally sensitive leaders and stewards regardless of career choice.
