Project Name Adaptive Reuse of Soldier Field
Project Category Institutional
Project Type Recreational Facilities
Project Location Chicago, Illinois

About the Project
Built in the 1920's, Soldier Field is a monument to the times and great sports palaces typical of the "Golden Age of Sports" and is one of few such stadiums still standing female viagra online.

Plans for the stadium began in 1919, when Holibird and Roche won an architectural competition to build the stadium as a memorial to American soldiers who died in wars cialis.

The stadium was constructed between 1922-28 by the South Park Commission, one of the predecessor park boards that were consolidated as the Chicago Park District in 1934 xenical.

It officially opened Oct.9, 1924—on the 53rd anniversary of the Chicago Fire—as the 45,000 seat Municipal Grant Park Stadium. Within a year is was renamed Soldier Field and dedicated on Nov. 11,1925. It was formerly dedicated during the Army-Navy game on Nov. 27, 1926. Built of concrete faced with granite-textured cast stone, the general design followed that of ancient Greek and Roman stadia, and the signature feature was the classic Doric colonnades that rose 100 feet above the playing field. The massive seven-acre facility included exterior dimensions of 678 by 1,184 feet and a central arena 300 by 887 feet.

On 15 November 2000, the Mayor of the City of Chicago, Richard M. Daley, publicly announced an agreement between the Chicago Bears NFL Football Team and the City of Chicago for a new stadium to be built within the colonnades of Soldier Field.

The plan addresses much more than replacing the stadium - lakefront parkland will be reclaimed, a new memorial to soldiers will be erected, a visitors center for the Museum Campus will be added and tree lined boulevards will be added to allow people freedom to enjoy the entire Museum Campus.

The project is a joint venture of two architecture firms. Lohan Associates with primary responsibility for the Master Plan and North Burnham Park Project. Wood & Zapata with primary responsibility for the architectural design of the Soldier Field Stadium.

In collaboration with the Bears, Wood & Zapata developed a scheme saving the colonnades of Soldier Field, while building a new state of the art open-air stadium within. The new stadium offers 62,000 seats and one of the most exciting luxury skybox configurations in football, with 133 luxury suites, 9,000 partially covered club seats, and 23' x 84' RGB video boards in each of the end zones.
